The Texas Lions Club has contacted the guild to inform us they have developed a new camp for people with Down Syndrome ages 8 to 17 that will be June 17 to 23.  The Lions Club runs several camps for children with special needs or that need some special consideration such as blind, burn victims, cancer, physical disabilities, and now Down syndrome - their newest offering.  Let me tell you, this group of people do a LOT more than provide eyeglasses to those in need (that is what they are most famous for)!

The camp is free to attend, and the Lions Club will either provide transportation for the child directly or assist with the cost of your driving them there yourself.  The camp is located in Kerrville outside of San Antonio and has all the amenities - horseback riding, zip lines, fishing, swimming, games, etc.  The camp is hosted by young adults with a heart to serve and all have been background checked, etc and have been ACA certified (means trained to run camps).  The ratio of camp counselors to children attending is almost 1 to 1 from what I understand.  That is awesome.

You must apply to have your child attend.  Each Lions Club can select two applicants to attend, and if you are not in the first two to be selected by the club than any open spots are filled first come first served from applicants across the state.

What is neat about this camp is not only will our kids be able to be served and catered to for a week, but they will be able to share their love with other people.  They will attend camp with burn survivors.  Because of the extensive love that people with Down syndrome share, the Lions Club thought it would be awesome for our children to share that love with other children that struggle with inclusion because of scars that left them looking different.

You can look up information about the camp at www.lionscamp.com

For more information, and to verify what I told you, please contact Suzy Compton at 806-223-8898 or email suzyg4@hotmail.com

I would like to let you know about a Support Group that we start over a year ago that helps families and Care Givers with Children of Special Needs. I started this group when I found myself needing to talk with others who had a clue as to what I was going through. My son (now 3) was born with HLHS and in a small town you just don't find a lot of this around (so I thought). I had joined a support group "It's my Heart" in Ft. Worth while we where at Cooks Medical Center and once home I really missed the group. So I created "SNAP's" (Special Needs Assistance Provided) a support group for families with children who have special needs of any kind. We are growing slowly. We are trying to raise awareness for all special needs children in this rural area and try to bring in more support, education, training etc. to our area.

We are having a Workshop/Info Fair on July 10th from 11am to 3pm in Childress , TX . We would love anyone that is in the Medical Field, Education System, ECI, Insurance World, DME, Medical Supply Companies, Other Support Groups etc...... that would like to help spread the word on all various special needs (HLHS, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Retts, learning disorders, neurological disorders - these are just a few of what we have in the support group)sign up for this fair.

If you are a speaker and would like to have a mini seminar or education discussion we would love to have you. We are doing 30 min increments.

Both Fees are $10 - seminar fees are $15

If you are interested please call me Becky Galyean # 940-585-8281 or email me at rebeccagalyean@att.net

To Whom It May Concern:,

SNAP is organization dedicated to providing Support, Resource, Awareness, and Advocacy.  Getting the diagnose of your child disability is difficult but there are many people who are willing to help you, beginning with SNAP.  SNAP also provides special care packages filled with toys, crafts and books to children with life threatening or chronic illness.  Our mission is simply to provide smiles to the faces of sick children. We feel these children deserve all of the special treatments they can get!!!

When families are faced with dealing with the daily battles of the child's illness, it is easy to feel isolated and without HOPE.  Receiving a toy package from SNAP helps the caretakers and children know they are not alone.  We also, hope to provide a few diversions from a long, gloomy hospital stay for kids.  For example, a typical package for any child includes books, drawing pad and pens, craft kits, headphones and relaxing music, magazines, or books on a tape.  We believe it can help make a positive impact on the child and offer a healthy outlet for anxiety or fear.

SNAP partners with local hospital CRMC and Hospice and few more organizations to reach children with terminal illnesses.  SNAP we want to give you back the “HOPE”.

Remember we are here for you if you need anything!!
