Meetings

Remember the dates:

July 17 – 3 PM  Church of Christ at the Colonies.  This will be a business meeting and will be open for all to attend.  All Board members are asked to be there if they can because Board members need to appoint all Officers positions for the next year.  By-laws currently call for officers to be a Board member, and we weigh the merits at this meeting of that provision.  Also, I bet we talk a little about the Buddy Walk.   WE NEED ALL BOARD MEMBERS TO TRY TO ATTEND.

July 24 – Family fun event sponsored by the Guild.  We have the date, but not the event.  Swimming? Funplex?  Spray painting at the Cadillac Ranch?  Skydiving?  If you would like to plan an event or have a suggestion for a family friendly event please call Jeff at 806-382-2326 or panhandledsg@yahoo.com or Vicki at 670-1568

August – We are looking for a weekend date to have a family get together at a ranch north of town with a pond, animals, and a lot of other fun activities.  The pond is fully stocked!  Any of you consider yourself fishers?  Think you can show the rest of us how it’s done?  I do my fishing at United Markets – one of our big Buddy Walk sponsors!

General News

Speaking of which, its that time again for the brave.  Anyone want to be involved with planning the 9th Annual Buddy Walk?  If so, call Jeff or Vicki.  You can have as much of a role as you want!

Enclosed is a sponsor packet and generic sponsor letter for the 2010 9th annual Panhandle DSG Buddy Walk.  We encourage you to find at least one new Sponsor for the event.  If you need more packets or have any questions please call Jeff or Vicki, or email the group email box.  If you have any pictures to submit to be on the Registration form this year please get them in to us by July 15th

Also, if you have not responded about the 2011 Calendar shoot, call Heidi Hawkins at Advanced Eye Care on Paramount ASAP.

Some of the group members went to the DownsEd conference in Austin and were amazed at the reading and math programs out there.  You need to go to one of these conferences as fast as you can.  Shari Medford will share what she learned with the group in August or September at one of the group meetings.  Keep your eyes out for the announcement.  You do NOT want to miss this info.  This is the best info we have ever found on how Erin thinks and the best way to teach her and help her read.

Other notes, we just had elections for the Board.  We appreciate all the folks that participated – both those that stepped up and were willing to serve, as well as those who voted.  The Hawkins and Medfords were elected to stay on another term, and we added a new Board position to the group – Ryan and Jennifer Monroe of Pampa.  They are a great addition to the leadership team.  We will have elections again in February where the rest of the seats are up for election. Please get involved now and see if you would like to be an officer of the group.  We sure need everyone’s participation, energy, and ideas to help make this a better place for people with Down syndrome.  That is what its all about – supporting them and the folks that love them.

So, the Board Members for 2010 are:

Vicki Cabrera (President) (This seat it up for election in odd years)

Troy and Shirley Headings (Shirley is Vice-President)  (This seat it up for election in odd years)

Justin and Bonnie Whitehead  (This seat it up for election in odd years)

Debbie Chandler (This seat it up for election in odd years)

Heidi Hawkins (This seat it up for election in even years)

Jeff and Shari Medford (Jeff is Treasurer) (This seat it up for election in even years)

I would like to let you know about a Support Group that we start over a year ago that helps families and Care Givers with Children of Special Needs. I started this group when I found myself needing to talk with others who had a clue as to what I was going through. My son (now 3) was born with HLHS and in a small town you just don't find a lot of this around (so I thought). I had joined a support group "It's my Heart" in Ft. Worth while we where at Cooks Medical Center and once home I really missed the group. So I created "SNAP's" (Special Needs Assistance Provided) a support group for families with children who have special needs of any kind. We are growing slowly. We are trying to raise awareness for all special needs children in this rural area and try to bring in more support, education, training etc. to our area.

We are having a Workshop/Info Fair on July 10th from 11am to 3pm in Childress , TX . We would love anyone that is in the Medical Field, Education System, ECI, Insurance World, DME, Medical Supply Companies, Other Support Groups etc...... that would like to help spread the word on all various special needs (HLHS, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Retts, learning disorders, neurological disorders - these are just a few of what we have in the support group)sign up for this fair.

If you are a speaker and would like to have a mini seminar or education discussion we would love to have you. We are doing 30 min increments.

Both Fees are $10 - seminar fees are $15

If you are interested please call me Becky Galyean # 940-585-8281 or email me at rebeccagalyean@att.net

To Whom It May Concern:,

SNAP is organization dedicated to providing Support, Resource, Awareness, and Advocacy.  Getting the diagnose of your child disability is difficult but there are many people who are willing to help you, beginning with SNAP.  SNAP also provides special care packages filled with toys, crafts and books to children with life threatening or chronic illness.  Our mission is simply to provide smiles to the faces of sick children. We feel these children deserve all of the special treatments they can get!!!

When families are faced with dealing with the daily battles of the child's illness, it is easy to feel isolated and without HOPE.  Receiving a toy package from SNAP helps the caretakers and children know they are not alone.  We also, hope to provide a few diversions from a long, gloomy hospital stay for kids.  For example, a typical package for any child includes books, drawing pad and pens, craft kits, headphones and relaxing music, magazines, or books on a tape.  We believe it can help make a positive impact on the child and offer a healthy outlet for anxiety or fear.

SNAP partners with local hospital CRMC and Hospice and few more organizations to reach children with terminal illnesses.  SNAP we want to give you back the “HOPE”.

Remember we are here for you if you need anything!!
