Buddy Walk® to benefit Down Syndrome Guild

In one in every 800 to 1,000 births, a child is born with Down syndrome, a chromosomal abnormality. The child is born with 47 chromosomes in each cell in his or her body rather than the usual 46.

The second annual Panhandle Down Syndrome Guild Buddy Walk® will be Saturday at Sam Houston Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the one-mile walk follows at 10 a.m.

The Buddy Walk® was established by the National Down Syndrome Society to promote awareness and love for people with Down syndrome, according to information from the PDSG.

The Panhandle Down Syndrome Guild will award prizes to the individual and team walkers who raise the most money. Last year, 300 people participated and this year's goal is 500 participants.

In addition to the walk, carnival games, bouncers, face painting, food, drinks, door prizes and drawings will be part of the festivities, the information said.

Of the money raised from the walk, 30 percent is sent directly to help support research. A portion of the funds is earmarked to pay for educational packets and books for new parents with children with Down syndrome, provide educational materials for PDSG projects, help defray general expenses and send a delegate to national events to acquire current information.
